Maximize Your Haul: Your Go-To Guide for 6x14 Double Axle Trailer with Extra Height

In a world where efficiency and capacity are paramount, selecting the right equipment can be the difference between a job done and a job done well. For businesses, hobbyists, and homeowners alike, the challenge of transporting goods, equipment, and materials safely and effectively is a constant. The enclosed trailer market is a direct response to this need, a sector that is not just stable but growing, with the global trailer market expected to grow from $60.11 billion in 2024 to $64.61 billion in 2025. Within this expansive market, one configuration stands out for its remarkable balance of size, strength, and versatility: the 6x14 double axle trailer with extra height.

This guide is designed to be your definitive resource, exploring why this specific cargo trailer is more than just a box on wheels. It’s a strategic asset for maximizing your haul, protecting your investments, and expanding your capabilities. We will dissect its core components, from the robust tandem axle foundation to the game-changing advantage of additional vertical space, providing you with the knowledge to make an informed decision and fully leverage its potential.

6 x 14 enclosed trailer weight

Introduction: The Unrivaled Versatility of the 6x14 Double Axle Trailer with Extra Height

The 6x14 enclosed trailer hits a sweet spot. Its 14-foot length offers substantial cargo space without becoming unwieldy for most full-size trucks and SUVs to tow. The 6-foot width provides ample room for a wide range of items, from landscaping equipment and construction materials to recreational vehicles and mobile workshop setups. When this practical footprint is combined with a double axle and the crucial addition of extra height, its utility skyrockets, making it a preferred choice for contractors, small business owners, and serious enthusiasts who demand more from their equipment.

The Core Advantage: Understanding “Double Axle” and “Extra Height”

Choosing a 6x14 trailer is the first step, but specifying a double axle (also known as a tandem axle) and extra height is a strategic decision that pays dividends in safety, capacity, and functionality. A standard single axle trailer of this size can be limited in its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), making it unsuitable for heavier loads. The tandem axle configuration dramatically increases payload capacity, enhances towing stability by distributing weight over four tires instead of two, and provides a crucial safety redundancy—if one tire fails, the other on the same side can temporarily support the load. This makes it a far more reliable choice for long hauls and valuable cargo.

Reaching New Heights: The Game-Changing Benefits of Extra Interior Height

Standard enclosed trailers often feature an interior height of around 6 feet 3 inches. Opting for “extra height” typically pushes this to 6 feet 6 inches or more. While a few inches may not sound significant, the practical benefits are immense. This additional vertical clearance allows for the transport of taller items like UTVs with roll cages or large commercial mowers without modification. It facilitates the creation of a more ergonomic workspace for those using the trailer as a mobile shop and, most importantly, unlocks the potential for vertical storage solutions like shelving and racks, effectively multiplying the usable cargo space within the same footprint.

The Core Advantage: Understanding “Double Axle” and “Extra Height”

Robust Foundations: Frame, Axles, and Braking Systems

The true strength of a 6x14 tandem axle trailer lies in its underpinnings. A well-built frame, often constructed with steel tube main rails and floor crossmembers, provides the rigidity needed to handle heavy loads without flexing. This frame supports the two axles, which work in concert to manage the cargo’s weight. Critically, trailers of this capacity are equipped with electric brakes on one or both axles. These brakes are synchronized with the tow vehicle’s braking system, providing proportional stopping power that significantly improves safety and control, especially during sudden stops or on steep descents.

The Power of Two: Why a Tandem Axle is Essential for 6x14 Hauling

A tandem axle trailer offers superior stability compared to its single axle counterpart. The four points of contact with the road minimize trailer sway caused by crosswinds or passing trucks, leading to a more confident and less fatiguing towing experience. This design also reduces the tongue weight percentage relative to the total load, further improving handling. With the trailer market showing signs of a strong resurgence, as evidenced by a significantly improved year-over-year performance in early 2025, the demand for more capable and safer configurations like the tandem axle is on the rise.

Access and Security: Doors and Locks

Secure and convenient access is vital. Most 6x14 trailers feature a side door for quick entry without needing to lower the main rear door. This is typically an RV-style door equipped with a flush lock, which offers enhanced security and a sleek, snag-free profile. For the rear, the two primary options are a spring-assisted ramp door or dual barn doors. A rear ramp door is ideal for rolling equipment in and out, while barn doors are useful when backing up to loading docks or in tight spaces where a ramp cannot be fully extended.

Reaching New Heights: The Significant Benefits of Extra Interior Height

The added interior height transforms a cargo trailer from a simple transport vessel into a multi-functional space. For a contractor, it means standing upright comfortably while accessing tools. For a motorsports enthusiast, it’s the difference between fitting a customized vehicle and having to remove parts. For a mobile business, it allows for the installation of taller display racks or equipment. This vertical advantage is a key factor in maximizing the utility and return on investment of your trailer.

Maximizing Your Haul: Practical Strategies for the 6x14 Extra Height Trailer

Anatomy of a High-Capacity Hauler: Key Features to Look For

When evaluating a 6x14 double axle trailer, look beyond the basic dimensions. Key structural indicators of quality include the spacing of the floor crossmembers and wall studs; 16-inch on-center spacing is a hallmark of a durable build. The flooring material itself is critical—high-quality plywood floors provide a strong, repairable, and customizable surface. Ensure the trailer is equipped with modern conveniences like bright, long-lasting LED lights for both interior visibility and exterior safety, and radial tires, which offer better heat dissipation and a longer lifespan than older bias-ply designs.

Weight Distribution and Safety Protocols

Properly loading your trailer is as important as the trailer’s construction. The fundamental rule is to place 60% of the cargo’s weight forward of the axles, centered left-to-right. This ensures adequate tongue weight, which is essential for preventing dangerous trailer sway. Use a consistent and secure method for tying down cargo, utilizing D-rings or E-track systems to prevent shifts during transit. Always be mindful of your trailer’s GVWR and never exceed it.

Robust Foundations: Frame, Axles, and Braking Systems

The foundation’s longevity depends on diligent upkeep. Regularly inspect the frame for any signs of stress fractures or rust, particularly at weld points. Axles require attention to their lubrication points; features like EZ Lube Hubs simplify this process immensely, allowing you to inject fresh grease without disassembling the hub. The electric brakes need periodic inspection to check for wear on the brake shoes and magnets and to ensure the wiring is intact and the breakaway system is functional.

Routine Maintenance for Longevity and Performance

A consistent maintenance schedule will protect your investment. This includes checking tire pressure before every trip, torquing lug nuts to specification, testing all LED lights, and inspecting the roof and wall seals for any signs of water intrusion. Periodically wash the trailer, paying special attention to the undercarriage to remove road salt and grime that can accelerate corrosion on the aluminum exterior and steel frame.

Durable Shell: Exterior and Roof Construction

The shell of an enclosed trailer is its first line of defense against the elements and road hazards. A high-quality aluminum exterior offers a great balance of durability and light weight, resisting rust and providing a clean finish. Many trailers come in a variety of sample colors, allowing for personalization or matching to a company’s branding. The roof is an equally critical component. A Galvalume roof, which is steel coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy, provides excellent corrosion resistance and longevity. Some premium models may offer a one-piece aluminum roof, which minimizes seams and further reduces the potential for leaks.

Who Benefits Most from a 6x14 Double Axle with Extra Height?

This trailer’s versatility makes it ideal for a diverse range of users.

  • Landscapers and Contractors: Perfect for hauling zero-turn mowers, tools, and materials, functioning as a mobile tool shed. These are a staple in the world of Utility & Landscape Trailers.
  • Powersports Enthusiasts: Easily accommodates ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, or motorcycles, with the extra height clearing roll cages and the ramp door simplifying loading.
  • Small Business Owners: Mobile detailers, concession vendors, or trade show exhibitors can create a custom trailer to serve as their mobile storefront or workshop.
  • Movers and General Haulers: Its substantial payload capacity makes it a reliable equipment trailer for moving furniture, appliances, and other heavy items.

Access and Security: Doors and Locks

With cargo theft on the rise, security cannot be an afterthought. In 2024, the U.S. saw a staggering 49% increase in cargo theft volume, making robust locking mechanisms essential. A quality side door with a flush lock and a deadbolt provides a secure secondary point of entry. For the main ramp or barn doors, heavy-duty bar locks are standard. For added peace of mind, consider investing in a high-quality coupler lock and wheel locks to deter theft of the entire trailer.

Making the Purchase: What to Consider Before You Buy

Interior and Ride Quality: Flooring, Tires, and Hubs

The interior environment and towing experience are defined by key components. The plywood floors should be of a durable grade, typically 3/4-inch, supported by robust flooring crossmembers. This provides a solid base for both cargo and any custom installations. The ride quality is largely determined by the tires and suspension. Radial tires are a must-have for their superior durability and smoother ride. Furthermore, EZ Lube Hubs are a non-negotiable feature for anyone who values straightforward maintenance, saving time and effort over the life of the trailer.

Understanding Construction Quality and Warranties

Not all trailers are created equal. Examine the quality of welds, the gauge of the aluminum siding, and the overall fit and finish. A reputable manufacturer will stand behind their product with a comprehensive warranty. Inquire about the length and coverage of the frame, roof, and axle warranties. A solid warranty is a strong indicator of the manufacturer’s confidence in their construction quality and materials.

Maximizing Your Haul: Practical Strategies for the 6x14 Extra Height Trailer

When purchasing, think about how you will use the space. The extra height is only a benefit if you leverage it. Consider options like factory-installed E-track on the walls for versatile tie-down points or D-rings strategically placed on the floor. If you plan to build a mobile workshop, ensure the wall stud spacing can support shelving and cabinets. Planning these details before you buy ensures your new trailer is ready to maximize its hauling potential from day one.

Conclusion: Your Ultimate Hauling Partner

Smart Loading Techniques for Maximizing Vertical Space

To truly maximize your haul, think in three dimensions. Use the extra interior height by installing sturdy, lightweight shelving along the walls for smaller items, keeping the floor clear for larger, heavier equipment. Utilize vertical E-track systems with specialized hangers for tools like ladders, trimmers, or cords. For bulkier items, consider if they can be stored vertically and secured safely. This strategic approach to loading can nearly double your trailer’s effective capacity.
