Does the 6x12 trailer come with electric brakes?

No it doesn’t but they’re available as a custom option.

Side Note: If the combined weight of the trailer and its load approaches or exceeds 3,000 pounds, many jurisdictions require brakes on the trailer. However, a 4×6 enclosed trailer, given its size, is unlikely to reach this weight limit when fully loaded, as they typically have a lower payload capacity.

Safety Considerations

Driving Conditions: If you plan to tow your trailer in hilly or mountainous areas, or if you’ll be driving in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, having electric brakes can significantly improve safety by reducing stopping distances and improving vehicle control.

Emergency Handling: Electric brakes can offer better control in emergency braking situations, reducing the risk of accidents.

Wear on Vehicle Brakes: Using a trailer with its own braking system can reduce wear and tear on your vehicle’s brakes, especially important for frequent towing or heavy loads.

What electric hookup do I need for my trailer lights?

4-way flat plug

What is the bolt pattern for the wheels?

5×4.5 (5 Lug)

What is your tire ply rating?

6 x 12 enclosed trailer weight

The Versatility of an Enclosed Cargo Trailer

An enclosed trailer offers unparalleled advantages over open-air alternatives. It protects your valuable cargo from weather, theft, and road debris, effectively serving as a mobile garage or storage unit. This security is indispensable whether you’re transporting tools for your contracting business, moving household goods, or hauling recreational vehicles like motorcycles or ATVs.

Understanding the 6×12 Single Axle Configuration

The 6×12 size hits a sweet spot, offering substantial cargo space without the bulk and towing demands of a larger tandem axle trailer. The single axle design enhances maneuverability, making it easier to navigate tight job sites, residential driveways, and crowded parking lots. It’s an ideal configuration for those who need a balance of capacity and agility.

What Makes Diamond Cargo Trailers Stand Out?

Diamond Cargo has carved out a reputation for building durable and reliable trailers at a competitive price point. They focus on solid construction fundamentals, using quality materials and proven manufacturing techniques. For buyers seeking a dependable workhorse without an excessive price tag, Diamond Cargo Trailers represent a compelling value proposition in the crowded cargo trailer market.

Understanding the 6×12 Single Axle: Key Specifications and Features

To truly appreciate what this trailer offers, it’s essential to break down its components. The quality of a trailer lies in its construction, from the frame that forms its backbone to the doors that grant access.

Dimensions and Capacities

The 6×12 designation refers to the interior box dimensions: 6 feet wide by 12 feet long. Most standard models feature an interior height of around 6 feet 3 inches, providing ample headroom for most individuals and equipment. A critical specification is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is typically 2990 lbs for this single axle model. This rating ensures the trailer can be towed by a wide range of trucks and SUVs without requiring specialized braking systems in many states.

Frame and Construction Excellence

The foundation of any Diamond Cargo trailer is its robust frame. These trailers are built with sturdy Steel Tube Main Frame Rails, a significant upgrade over the C-channel or I-beam frames found on some competing models. This tubular design provides superior torsional rigidity and strength. The integrity extends upward with wall studs and Roof Members typically spaced 16 or 24 inches on center, creating a durable and resilient structure.

Exterior Features and Design

The exterior of a Diamond Cargo trailer is designed for longevity and functionality. Most models feature a semi-screwless .024 or .030 gauge Aluminum skin, which provides a clean aesthetic and reduces potential leak points. A standout feature is the V-NOSE design. This aerodynamic front-end cuts through the wind more effectively, which can lead to better fuel economy for the tow vehicle and improved stability. It also adds a small amount of extra interior space at the front of the trailer.

Interior Comfort and Durability

Inside, functionality is paramount. Diamond Cargo equips its trailers with high-quality 3/4″ plywood floors. This material is exceptionally durable, capable of withstanding heavy loads and impacts. Unlike treated wood, this plywood is easily repaired or replaced if a section becomes damaged. The interior walls are typically finished with 3/8″ plywood, providing a sturdy surface for mounting shelves, racks, or E-track systems to secure cargo.

Doors and Accessibility

Easy access to your cargo is non-negotiable. The 6×12 model typically comes standard with a spring-assisted rear Ramp Door, making it simple to load wheeled equipment like lawnmowers, motorcycles, or dollies. A side entry door, usually 32 inches wide, provides convenient walk-in access without needing to lower the main ramp. These doors are often equipped with both an RV-style latch and a cam bar for enhanced security.

Axle, Wheels, and Braking System

The “single axle” in the name refers to its 3500 lb rated leaf spring axle. This is a time-tested, durable suspension system that provides a smooth ride and is easy to maintain. While many 2990 lb GVWR models do not come standard with electric brakes, it’s a highly recommended option for anyone hauling near the trailer’s maximum capacity, as it significantly improves stopping power and safety.

Lighting and Electrical

All Diamond Cargo trailers are equipped with a full suite of DOT-approved LED lighting, including tail lights, brake lights, and clearance markers. LED lights are brighter, last longer, and consume less power than traditional incandescent bulbs. The interior is typically outfitted with a 12-volt dome light, providing visibility inside the enclosed space, which is wired to a standard 4-way or 7-way trailer plug.

The Diamond Cargo Difference: Quality You Can Trust

Choosing a brand is as important as choosing a size. Diamond Cargo has built its business on specific principles that appeal to discerning buyers.

Reputation and Manufacturing Standards

Diamond Cargo trailers are manufactured in Douglas, Georgia, a hub for the cargo trailer industry. The brand is known for producing a high volume of trailers, which allows them to offer competitive pricing. They adhere to established manufacturing standards, ensuring consistency and reliability across their product lines. Their reputation is built on delivering a functional, durable product that meets the expectations of everyday users.

Standard Inclusions and Value

One of the most attractive aspects of Diamond Cargo is the number of features included as standard. Where some brands might upcharge for a V-nose, a side door, or plywood walls, Diamond Cargo often includes these as part of the base package. This approach provides excellent out-of-the-box value, giving buyers a highly capable trailer without a long list of expensive add-ons.

Customer Service and Support

When you buy a trailer, you’re also buying into a support network. Diamond Cargo works through a nationwide network of dealers. This model ensures that customers can receive local support for sales, service, and warranty claims. Most trailers come with a manufacturer’s limited warranty, providing peace of mind and protection for your investment. It’s always wise to call and confirm warranty details with your dealer.

Customization Options for Your 6×12 Single Axle Diamond Cargo Trailer

While the standard model is highly capable, one of the greatest strengths of ordering a new trailer is the ability to customize it for your exact needs.

Enhancing Functionality and Aesthetics

You can upgrade nearly any aspect of your trailer. Popular functional upgrades include adding ladder racks to the roof, installing stabilizer jacks for unhitched stability, and upgrading to a higher-gauge aluminum exterior for increased dent resistance. Aesthetic options like blackout packages (black trim, wheels, and hardware) or a wide range of color choices allow you to match the trailer to your company branding or tow vehicle.

Tailoring for Specific Uses

The 6×12 platform can be adapted for countless applications. Contractors might add tool cribs and heavy-duty shelving. Landscapers could opt for trimmer racks and a reinforced ramp. Motorcycle enthusiasts often install wheel chocks and multiple D-ring tie-down points on the plywood floors. The possibilities are vast, allowing you to create a purpose-built tool rather than a generic box.

Custom Trailer Ordering: Making It Your Own

The process typically involves working directly with a dealer. You can specify everything from extra interior height and window placement to electrical packages with outlets and overhead lighting. When you call a dealer, be prepared with a list of your needs. This collaborative process ensures the final product is a perfect reflection of your requirements.

The Buying Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Navigating the purchase of a new enclosed cargo trailer can be straightforward if you follow a structured approach.

Research and Needs Assessment

Before you even look at listings, clearly define what you will haul. Consider the weight and dimensions of your typical cargo. This will confirm that the 6×12 size and its payload capacity are sufficient. Make a list of “must-have” features versus “nice-to-have” options to guide your search and budget.

Finding a Reputable Dealer

Look for authorized Diamond Cargo dealers with a strong reputation for customer service. Read online reviews, check their inventory, and don’t hesitate to call and speak with a sales representative. A good dealer will be knowledgeable and patient, answering your questions without pressure. They are your primary point of contact for the entire process.

Pricing, Financing, and Deals

Trailer prices can fluctuate due to material costs. Always request an itemized quote that includes the base price, any options, freight charges, and applicable taxes or fees. Many dealers offer financing options through third-party lenders, which can make the purchase more manageable. Ask about any current promotions or package deals that might offer additional value.

Pre-Purchase Inspection

Whether buying from dealer stock or picking up a custom order, perform a thorough inspection. Operate the ramp door and side door, check that all lights are working, inspect the welds on the frame, and look for any blemishes on the exterior or interior. This is your opportunity to ensure the trailer meets your expectations before you tow it off the lot.

Completing the Purchase and Paperwork

The final step involves signing the bill of sale and handling the title and registration. The dealer will provide you with a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO), which you will need to register the trailer at your local DMV. Ensure you understand all the paperwork and receive copies of everything for your records.

Towing, Driving, and Safety Considerations for a Single Axle Trailer

Owning a trailer comes with the responsibility of operating it safely.

Vehicle Compatibility and Towing Capacity

Always check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for its maximum towing capacity. The fully loaded weight of your 6×12 trailer must not exceed this limit. Ensure you have the correct hitch and ball size (typically 2 inches for this trailer). A single axle trailer is relatively lightweight, making it compatible with many mid-size SUVs and nearly all pickup trucks.

Weight Distribution and Payload Management

Properly loading your trailer is crucial for safe towing. Aim to place 60% of the cargo weight in front of the axle, centered from side to side. This ensures adequate tongue weight (10-15% of the total trailer weight), which prevents dangerous trailer sway. Secure all cargo firmly to prevent it from shifting during transit.

6×12 enclosed trailer

Conclusion

The 6×12 single axle Diamond Cargo trailer offers a compelling combination of size, functionality, and value. Its sturdy construction, featuring a Steel Tube Main Frame and durable plywood interior, provides a reliable platform for a wide range of uses. The standard V-NOSE design, rear ramp, and side door create a user-friendly experience right from the start. Whether you need a dependable trailer for your business, a secure way to move your recreational gear, or a versatile hauler for projects around the home, this model is a formidable choice.

By assessing your specific needs, exploring customization options, and working with a reputable dealer, you can configure a Diamond Cargo trailer that will serve you well for years to come. Take the time to conduct your research, perform a thorough inspection, and prioritize safe towing practices. A well-chosen enclosed trailer is more than just a purchase; it’s a powerful tool that enhances your capability and protects your investments.
