Does the 5x12 trailer come with electric brakes?

No it doesn’t but they’re available as a custom option.

Side Note: If the combined weight of the trailer and its load approaches or exceeds 3,000 pounds, many jurisdictions require brakes on the trailer. However, a 4x6 enclosed trailer, given its size, is unlikely to reach this weight limit when fully loaded, as they typically have a lower payload capacity.

Safety Considerations

Driving Conditions: If you plan to tow your trailer in hilly or mountainous areas, or if you’ll be driving in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, having electric brakes can significantly improve safety by reducing stopping distances and improving vehicle control.

Emergency Handling: Electric brakes can offer better control in emergency braking situations, reducing the risk of accidents.

Wear on Vehicle Brakes: Using a trailer with its own braking system can reduce wear and tear on your vehicle’s brakes, especially important for frequent towing or heavy loads.

The Ultimate Guide: Finding Your 5x12 Enclosed Trailer with E-Track System

Whether you’re a contractor hauling tools, a powersports enthusiast transporting a vehicle, or a small business owner moving inventory, the challenge remains the same: how to secure your load safely and efficiently. An unsecured load is not just a risk to your valuable cargo; it’s a danger on the road. This is where the combination of a versatile 5x12 enclosed trailer and a robust E-track system becomes an unbeatable solution. In a market where enclosed trailers represent a significant portion of new units produced, with Vertex Market Intelligence reporting they accounted for 47% in 2023, understanding how to properly equip one is more critical than ever. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to find, outfit, and utilize the perfect 5x12 enclosed cargo trailer with a custom E-track system.

5 x 12 enclosed trailer

Why a 5x12 Enclosed Trailer?

The 5x12 enclosed trailer hits a sweet spot for versatility and maneuverability. Its five-foot width allows it to be towed easily by most SUVs and trucks without requiring oversized mirrors, while its twelve-foot length provides ample space for motorcycles, ATVs, landscaping equipment, or stacks of moving boxes. This size is large enough to be highly functional yet small enough to navigate city streets and tight job sites. The enclosed design protects your cargo from weather and theft, making it a secure, mobile storage unit. With the enclosed trailer market projected to grow steadily, according to a report from Grand View Research, investing in a popular and practical size like the 5x12 is a sound decision.

The E-Track Advantage: Secure Your Load, Simplify Your Life

The E-track system is the key to unlocking a trailer’s full potential. It’s a standardized system of high-strength steel rails with multiple anchor points, allowing for near-infinite tie-down configurations. Unlike simple D-rings, which offer limited placement options, E-track provides a continuous line of securement points along the floor and walls. This adaptability means you can safely secure a heavy vehicle one day and delicate, oddly shaped equipment the next, all using the same core system. It transforms a standard enclosed trailer from a simple box on wheels into a highly organized and secure cargo-hauling machine.

Understanding Your 5x12 Enclosed Trailer: Key Specifications and Features

Dimensions and Capacity: Is 5x12 Right for You?

Before purchasing, confirm the trailer’s interior dimensions. A 5x12 designation refers to the cargo box, but interior height and the space between wheel wells are critical. Measure your largest piece of equipment or vehicle to ensure it will fit. Pay close attention to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is the maximum allowed weight of the trailer plus its cargo. Subtract the trailer’s empty weight to determine its payload capacity. Never exceed this limit, as it compromises the safety of your towing vehicle, brakes, and axles.

Construction and Durability: What to Look For in an Enclosed Cargo Trailer

The foundation of a quality enclosed cargo trailer is its frame, typically made from steel for strength and cost-effectiveness. Check for solid welds and a protective coating to prevent rust. The trailer’s exterior skin is usually aluminum, which is lightweight and corrosion-resistant. The flooring is another critical component; 3/4-inch plywood is a common, durable standard. Consider the ramp door’s construction and weight capacity, especially if you plan to load a heavy vehicle or rolling equipment.

Essential Trailer Components for Safety and Performance

Beyond the box, inspect the running gear. Ensure the axle’s weight rating is appropriate for the trailer’s GVWR. Check the tire quality, age, and load rating. A functional braking system (electric brakes are common on trailers of this size) is non-negotiable for safe stopping. Finally, inspect the coupler, safety chains, and lighting system. All lights—brake, turn, and running—must be in perfect working order before you tow the trailer.

Demystifying the E-Track System: Your Cargo Securement Solution

What is E-Track? The Foundation of Versatile Load Securement

E-track is a system of heavy-gauge steel rails featuring a series of rectangular slots. These slots are designed to accept a wide variety of specialized fittings, from simple D-rings to complex shelving brackets. By mounting this rail inside your trailer, you create a grid of strong, reliable anchor points. The system’s strength lies in its ability to distribute the force of a load across multiple points on the trailer’s frame, providing a much more secure hold than individual anchor points.

Types of E-Track: Horizontal vs. Vertical and Their Applications

E-track comes in two primary orientations. Horizontal E-track has slots that run parallel to the length of the rail and is most often installed on the floor or lower walls of a trailer. It is ideal for securing the wheels of a vehicle or the base of heavy equipment. Vertical E-track features slots that are perpendicular to the rail’s length. This type is typically mounted on the trailer walls and is excellent for securing tall items like refrigerators or cabinets, allowing you to use ratchet straps to hold them upright against the wall.

E-Track Materials and Finishes: Built to Last in Your Trailer Van

Most E-track rails are made from high-strength 12-gauge steel. The most common finish is galvanized steel, which involves coating the steel with a layer of zinc to provide excellent protection against rust and corrosion—a crucial feature inside a trailer that may be exposed to moisture. You might also find powder-coated options, which offer a durable and often more aesthetically pleasing finish, typically in black or grey. Regardless of the finish, always choose a rail made from high-strength steel to ensure reliability.

Strategic E-Track Planning & Installation for Your 5x12 Enclosed Trailer

Designing Your E-Track Layout: Maximizing Space and Functionality

Before drilling a single hole, plan your layout. For a 5x12 enclosed trailer, a common and effective setup includes two parallel runs of horizontal E-track on the floor, spaced to accommodate the wheels of your primary vehicle (like a motorcycle or ATV). Adding another line of horizontal rail along the lower portion of each wall provides versatile tie-down points for securing various types of load. Consider adding vertical E-track sections near the front of the trailer for securing tall items or creating simple shelving systems.

E-Track Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide for Your Enclosed Cargo Trailer

Proper installation is critical for the system’s safety. First, locate the trailer’s frame studs or crossmembers. The E-track rail must be securely fastened to these structural components, not just the plywood or thin wall paneling. Use a stud finder to mark their locations. Align your E-track rail over these marks and pre-drill pilot holes. For the strongest connection, use bolts with washers and nuts to go through the trailer’s frame. If bolting is not possible, heavy-duty self-drilling screws designed for metal are the next best option. Ensure screws are long enough to fully engage the steel frame.

Essential E-Track Accessories: Tools for Every Load

Core E-Track Fittings: The Connection Points

The system’s versatility comes from its accessories. The most fundamental are E-track strap fittings, which are sewn into the ends of ratchet straps or cam buckle straps. Another essential is the rope tie-off, a small fitting with a D-ring that allows you to use any standard rope or strap. O-ring and D-ring fittings are also popular, creating simple, robust anchor points for hooks and custom strap configurations. These core fittings are the building blocks of nearly any securement setup.

Specialized Securement and Organization Tools

Beyond basic tie-downs, a vast ecosystem of specialized accessories exists. Wheel chocks designed to clip directly into floor-mounted E-track are perfect for securing a motorcycle. Load bars can be used to brace cargo or create compartments within the trailer. There are even specialized hooks and brackets for hanging tools, ladders, and cords, transforming your E-track from a securement system into a complete organizational solution.

Maximizing E-Track Versatility and Custom Options

Don’t be afraid to combine different accessories to suit your specific load. You can use a combination of ratchet straps to hold a vehicle in place and smaller cam buckle straps with D-rings to secure toolboxes around it. For commercial use, E-track wood beam sockets allow you to create custom, removable shelving using standard 2x4s, providing double-decker storage capacity in your 5x12 enclosed trailer.

Safety, Maintenance, and Longevity of Your E-Track System

Understanding Working Load Limit (WLL) and Load Distribution

Every component in your securement system—the rail, the fittings, and the ratchet straps—has a Working Load Limit (WLL). This is the maximum load a component is rated to handle during normal use. The WLL is typically one-third of the component’s break strength. It is crucial that the combined WLL of your tie-downs exceeds the weight of the cargo you are securing. Always distribute the load across multiple tie-down points to avoid overloading a single anchor.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance for Your E-Track

Periodically inspect your E-track system for signs of wear and tear. Look for cracks, bending, or severe corrosion on the steel rails. Check that all screws or bolts remain tight. Examine your straps for fraying, cuts, or sun damage, and inspect fittings for cracks or deformation. A compromised component can fail under load, leading to a catastrophic accident. Clean the rails occasionally to ensure fittings can be inserted and removed smoothly.

Troubleshooting Common E-Track Issues

If a fitting becomes difficult to insert or remove, there may be debris in the E-track slot or the fitting itself may be slightly bent. Clean the slot and inspect the fitting. If a section of rail becomes damaged, it should be replaced immediately rather than repaired. Never attempt to weld a broken E-track rail, as this can compromise the steel’s integrity.

Finding and Purchasing Your 5x12 Enclosed Trailer with E-Track System

New vs. Used: Considerations for Your Investment

A new trailer offers a full warranty, modern features, and the peace of mind of being the first owner. You can often order one with a factory-installed E-track system. A used trailer can offer significant cost savings but requires a thorough inspection of the frame, axle, tires, flooring, and electrical system. If buying used, you will likely need to plan and install the E-track system yourself.

Where to Buy: Dealers, Manufacturers, and Online Options

Trailer dealerships offer a wide selection of brands, financing options, and the ability to see the product in person. Buying directly from a manufacturer can sometimes allow for more customization. Online marketplaces can have good deals, but be cautious and always inspect the trailer thoroughly before any money changes hands. Ensure the seller has a clear title for the vehicle.

Key Questions to Ask Before You Buy Your Product

Before finalizing a purchase, ask critical questions. What is the trailer’s exact payload capacity? What is the frame made of and what are the crossmember spacings? What is the axle’s brand and rating? Does it come with a spare tire? If it has E-track pre-installed, ask how it was fastened—were screws or bolts used, and did they connect to the frame?

Conclusion: Secure Your Adventures, Empower Your Business
